Video from Keaton Jones:
As I mentioned earlier, I was bullied for my dark skin being called cockroach, burnt, ugly, etc. No one knew what was happening to me because I never said anything. I was ashamed of what the other kids were saying about me and did not want to get my mother involved because she had other things I felt were more important. It got to the point I started to skip school just so no one would make fun of me. I say this to say find out if your child is being bullied. Here are some ways how:
Talk to your child: It is really uncomfortable to talk about the ways people bully you. So make it easy for them to talk to you. Even as an adult I sometimes feel uncomfortable to talk about it, so imagine how a child feels.
Learn the facts about bullying: It is not just a thing that kids do. It is a real life traumatic event to children who gets bullied. It can cause emotional distress and loneliness as well as lower self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Some situations the outcome is tragic: the child may take his or her own life.
Learn the signs: Look for changes in the child. I will name a few here but you can learn more by clicking here.
- Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem
- Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide
- Unexplainable injuries
- Substance abuse
